     "That was me, on the left, back in August 2011 (183 pounds) :-( . By January 2012, I added 10-15 extra pounds (193-198 pounds) :-( :-( . I was so self-conscious. Although I wanted to lose weight really bad, I didn't have the motivation.

     I started going to the gym but didn't know how to train properly. I decided to start taking High interval/strength training classes. I started taking B&G with Melina at the CSULB Rec Center. The first day, I remember thinking to myself "Oh my God, I'm going to die" but boy, did It feel so good afterwards. She's very encouraging and pushes you to your limits. I have been an athlete most of my life, even securing a college athletic scholarship, and strive to take care of myself in general in other ways, such as developing and maintaining good eating, sleeping, and exercise habits. Still, my weight has always tended to fluctuate +/- 10 lbs. And although the class does not get easier, your body does get stronger, leaner, and becomes more efficient. Melina is also a stickler for proper form, which many instructors casually overlook. She makes you think about each movement as key to reaping the maximum benefits from each workout. There will be times you feel like you cannot take another step, that your heart rate cannot get any higher, that pigs will fly before you squeak out another push up. But Melina has mastered beautifully the art of motivating you to do the impossible. "I'd just like to let everyone know what Melina's approach to fitness means to me!

I began attending her boot camps in the fall of 2009.  Prior to that, I was at a plateau with my running… I just wasn't seeing much improvement in my overall physical fitness.  

Melina's no nonsense approach to cross training during training sessions has been a breath of fresh air…literally!!  I love the park setting and I thoroughly enjoy how Melina changes up the workout routines…it's NEVER boring or predictable.  Melina is a motivating coach, a knowledgeable dietician, and lots of fun to work with! 

As the saying goes, "Slow and steady wins the race." Although I have only been attending an average of one boot camp per week, my core strength has improved tremendously…I don't think my core has been this strong since my college years! My endurance has also greatly improved and I definitely see a difference in my running.  I look forward to beating my best 5K time at the Race on the Base in Los Alamitos next month! After that, who knows?  I definitely see a half-marathon in my near future!
